Pendleton Village History

Discovering the past

The Travelling Shop

G.E. Entwistle's Travelling Shop was a familiar sight in the late 50's/early 60's. The mobile shop used to go round the Pendleton area 1 day a week. It was based at the mixed grocery/wet fish shop on the main street in Whalley and covered an area around Whalley, Brockhall, Sabden, Mitton, Wiswell and Pendleton four and a half days a week.

 Do you remember this Shop?

" I remember the mobile shop visiting Pendleton very well, it was one of the highlights of the week! We called him "The Mobile Man" and the van was like an Aladdin's Cave. You have to remember we didn''t go shopping very much, so to be met with the choice he had on the van was wonderful."      Susan

I remember him as a very thin but kindly man who seemed to enjoy out excitement -- I suppose we were pretty good customers. I also remember being bitterly disappopinted when he stopped visiting the village
